This week I realized this month marks the 20^th anniversary of the publication of Spencer Perkins’ and my book, More Than Equals: Racial Healing for the Sake of the Gospel.  We couldn’t believe someone would publish it, we were so happy for InterVarsity Press.  We were such rookies.  We paid our own way to a big conference where we were not speaking, had a big poster of the book cover printed, set up tables and a credit card machine, and got ready.  People poured out of the conference, past our table.  We sold 6 copies maybe.  One of my favorite theologians Alexander Schmemann once wrote in his journals about a book he submitted, “It is what I think and what I feel.  What happens to it from here is not important and out of my hands.”  I have tried to hold onto that.  What was important was that More Than  Equals was what we thought and felt at that snapshot moment from Mississippi.  We knew that half our message was simply standing side by side to testify. Our life together behind the book was real, and I’m so grateful to God for the witness and joy we shared.  We could not have imagined that the book would eventually sell 60,000 copies.
