Final Four: Gotta Respect Duke

Chris Rice Avatar

The Reconcilers blog banner is Duke blue for a couple days.  Those who love to hate Duke basketball?  This is a team with no prima donas, built on unselfishness, mental toughness, defense, and rebounding — not to mention close friendship — where everyone embraces their role for the sake of the team.  All this instilled by a coach who I invariably hear praise Duke opponents in after-game interviews on the radio here in Durham.

P.S.  It’s going to be crazy tomorrow on campus.  Too bad I’m going away for two days of reflection and solitude.

P.S.S.  I couldn’t root against Butler.  Immediately after the game their coach said, “I told these guys, with their effort, their focus, their determination, you’re at peace with whatever happens on the scoreboard because you’ve got a group that’s given every single thing they have.”

I saw Chris Rice wearing a blue wig and holding up a banner for the Duke Divinity School on the Championship telecast

I have always supported Duke in the playoffs (after Wake is out) because they require their players to be able to read and write. Nothing against Butler–I understand some of their players are good students.

From central Indiana and the home of Purdue University (whom Duke out played in the second half of their shared contest), I say with all due respect, I didn’t think Butler could win those last four games. But, they did, through “unselfishness, mental toughness, defense, and rebounding – not to mention friendship – where everyone embraces their role for the sake of the team.” Well, they almost slayed the fourth giant. Only an inch away, twice, for the game winner. A great game, hard fought by two great teams and coaches – one with a bright future, and the other with a secured retirement! Boiler up!
