One summer higlight was our first week-long Duke Summer Institute in June, “Shaping the Beloved Community in a Divided World.” A precious gift was having my dear friend and mentor John Perkins present the entire week. With 100 participants from 26 states and 6 countries, John and I were overwhelmed at a glimpse of God enlarging the movement across the world of Christian witness amidst destuctive conflict, something we could not have imagined 11 years ago when Spencer died so suddenly. Other faculty included musician/theologian Jeremy Begbie, Duke professors Ellen Davis and Norman Wirzba, Chicago community developer Mary Nelson, new monasticism leader Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, Divinity School Dean Greg Jones, and my dear friend Sam Barkat. Read the blog and watch the slidehow. We’re working now on dates for 2010.
